Fever in the Jungle by Sebastian Kevany

– marking and observing International Day of Epidemic Preparedness –

Today is International Day of Epidemic Preparedness, a day of observation that is officially recognised by the United Nations, subsequent to a decision of the General Assembly in December 2020. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of having effective measures at local, national, regional and global level to prevent and respond to epidemics.

But what is life really like amidst the global battle against epidemics and infectious diseases?

Sebastian Kevany, author of Fever in the Jungle: Inside the World of an Epidemic Troubleshooter, has been to some of the remotest corners of the world – off the beaten tracks and to places where there are no tracks at all! He is able to draw on his experiences of over one hundred treatment, prevention and outbreak missions, describing them all in vivid detail. Amidst the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, Ebola, he takes us out of hotel room bubbles, from rattling convoys and ramshackle malaria clinics in South Sudan, to air-conditioned meetings with government officials in Sierra Leone.

Sebastian captures the fine line between success and failure in tackling some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. This is a book that will inspire involvement in the work of epidemic control in inhospitable places.

– Mark Pollock, author of Making It Happen

Sebastian Kevany has worked in the Middle East, the South Pacific, Eastern Europe and Asia, focusing on epidemic and infectious disease control and response, monitoring and evaluation, health security, international relations, human rights, conflict resolution, diplomacy and international relations. He also has a passion for surfing: a subject that he has written about in Between the Moon and the Fire: Life in Surfing Moments published in 2020.

Fever in the Jungle by Sebastian Kevany is published under the imprint of The Manuscript Publisher and available to buy online, in print and e-book editions, alongside his other published work, Between the Moon and the Fire: Life in Surfing Moments. Proceeds from sales will benefit the charities that include Alone and The Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Only When I'm Dancing Can I Feel This Free by Wayne Power

Wayne Power’s third collection of poetry is, arguably, his strongest to date, which is saying something because his previous publications – Everyone’s a Star after Midnight from 2020 and Neon Hearts and the Angry Mob (2022) – were no mean feats and did not come up short, well received by audiences and critics alike.

Much of the familiar terrain is covered but new treasures are unearthed, on paths that might appear to be well trod, as fresh light is shone on our daily lives, our comings and our goings, where we all are at this stage in the 21st century.

“I hope people find whatever they need to find in these poems. They come from a rebel heart. A neon heart. They are the hopes, fears, unrequited feelings, the human condition, the love unspoken and said, the friendships, the kinship, the eternal family, the great beyond. They are lesson learnt. Turn your lessons into your legacy.” – Wayne Power

Wayne Power is a writer who “speaks for and to a lot of his generation” in the words of playwright, Jim Nolan.

Reviews for this Book

Only When I’m Dancing Can I Feel This Free is Wayne Power’s third poetry collection. … This new collection, once again, showcases his endless gift to wield words that will make you laugh, cry and think. All wrapped up in a singular, powerful and unique voice, that celebrates and laments modern Ireland, modern romance, in a comedic, thought provoking, gritty and edgy style. With an unmistakable grá for his home town of Waterford. We are delighted to launch this collection with him. – Waterford Writers Weekend
This poetry collection encapsulates the joy and freedom that the author has found in poetry and spoken word. With a nod to the Queen of Pop whose lyrics inspired the title of the book, the collection shows the power of poetry and how it can change lives. – GCN magazine
